Debian Wheezy – A (very) humble post install guide

So after making a custom install of debian’s latest stable release, i thought it may become handy to make a small post-install post, to keep you fellas and myself guided afterwards. I also did it so I could simply copy-paste in future installations. So here’s what have done to make Wheezy sing on my computer.

Flash, java & git

$ sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre icedtea-7-jre-jamvm \
gsfonts gsfonts-x11 flashplugin-nonfree git git-core

TrueType Fonts

$ sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Support for compressing and de-compressing files

$ sudo apt-get install unace rar unrar zip unzip p7zip p7zip-full p7zip-rar mpack sharutils uudeview arj cabextract

Multimedia (codecs)
Depending on your system architecture choose w32codecs or w64codecs

$ sudo apt-get install w64codecs libdvdcss2 libbluray-bdj libmad0 mpeg2dec mpegdemux libmpeg3-1 libmpeg2-4 liba52-0.7.4 gstreamer0.10-crystalhd libquicktime2 libmp4v2-2 faad lame flac mpeg3-utils icedax vlc

Internet stuff

I like to have at least 2 browsers, though I still use iceweasel the most

$ sudo apt-get install chromium-browser && sudo apt-get install iceweasel

And install some adblock… 😉 (this wll probably work only on iceweasel)

$ sudo apt-get install xul-ext-adblock-plus

Some p2p goodness

$ sudo apt-get install amule transmission filezilla filezilla-common

IM Stuff

I like pidgin a lot, and also xchat. I do warn you, that by installing these 2, it will install a whole lot of dependencies. You may want to have more plugins, wich you can find listed here:

$ sudo apt-get install pidgin pidgin-themes pidgin-encryption xchat

A very nimle firewall is gufw, frontend for ufw. Simply install it by:

$ sudo apt-get install gufw

Now, heck your state/settings…

$ sudo ufw status verbose

…and add some rules

sudo ufw deny 5353/udp
sudo ufw deny 5900/tcp
sudo ufw deny 22
sudo ufw deny 25/tcp
sudo ufw deny 135,139,445/tcp
sudo ufw deny 137,138/udp
sudo ufw deny 110
sudo ufw deny 2049
sudo ufw deny 143
sudo ufw deny 21/tcp
sudo ufw deny ssh

If not enable at this point, please run

$ sudo ufw enable

More info & rules at:

Image Stuff (optional in my case)
Pinta is a linux equivalent to M$Paint

$ sudo apt-get install pinta

GIMP + extras
GIMP is shipped by default with wheezy, so just install the extras (if you installed from a mini.iso or like myself made a custom install, run the full line)

$ sudo apt-get install gimp && sudo apt-get install gimp-plugin-registry gimp-data-extras

Suppport for asian fonts

$ sudo apt-get install ttf-arphic-gbsn00lp ttf-arphic-gkai00mp \
ttf-sazanami-gothic ttf-sazanami-mincho ttf-wqy-microhei ttf-kochi-gothic

NOTE: Like the title said, this is a humble post-install. It is a WYP. So if you have anything else impostant to add, let me know afterwards on the comments bellow. I yould like that. 🙂

    Just found this post while trying to read up on firewall options for wheezy for noobs. You may think its a humble post but it was just right for a deb/firewall noob, that gufw and the rules you threw really helped me get started. much apprecaited!

      Thank you very much for your kind words. I say nimble because I consider myself a noob as well. I try to share as much info as possible to everyone in particular to those people facing some of the issues I’ve faced.
      Once again, thanks for your words! (:

    1. Thanks for the tips as well! I think I have a line on the repos for the packages though. But your solution is the “official” one afaik.
      Many thanks for dropping by.
