Install Plank on Debian Wheezy

plank

Ok, so i enjoy simple Desktop Environments, I’ve always loved how Gnome 2 looked like, and to me the easiest way to to get that same feeling (or close) is by running XFCE.
So and I used to configure pretty much like a top panel and a dock bar on the bottom, with my most used applications. It used to be Docky, it installs to much Gnome packages, wich i dont want. Only the essential.

So after watching distros like manjaro and ElementaryOSrunning it, i got in love by Plank. Nice alternative from same creators of docky, but more faster and lighter.

Since Plank isn’t on Debian’s Repos, one must import from the PPA. Here’s how to do it, without installing the ubuntu ppa.

I’ve chosen to use 12.04 version, since in theory is more bug-free/stable and more compatible with Debian Wheezy and Jessie

1) Make a file named plank containing the following lines:

#amd64
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/p/plank/plank_0.2.0~bzr818-0ubuntu1~12.04~ricotz1_amd64.deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/p/plank/libplank0_0.2.0~bzr818-0ubuntu1~12.04~ricotz1_amd64.deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/p/plank/libplank-common_0.2.0~bzr818-0ubuntu1~12.04~ricotz1_all.deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/b/bamf/libbamf3-0_0.3.6-0ubuntu1~12.04~ricotz1_amd64.deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/b/bamf/libbamf0_0.3.6-0ubuntu1~12.04~ricotz1_amd64.deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/b/bamf/libbamf-dev_0.3.6-0ubuntu1~12.04~ricotz1_amd64.deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/b/bamf/bamfdaemon_0.3.6-0ubuntu1~12.04~ricotz1_amd64.deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/libw/libwnck3/gir1.2-wnck-3.0_3.4.2-1~precise1_amd64.deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/libw/libwnck3/libwnck-3-0_3.4.2-1~precise1_amd64.deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/docky/ubuntu/pool/main/libw/libwnck3/libwnck-3-common_3.4.2-1~precise1_all.deb

Note: if you’re runnig 32 bit version of debian, just replace amd64 with i386

Download the amd64 file here and the i386 here

2) Open the terminal in the same directory where you saved the file, and type

$ wget -c -i plank

3) now install the .deb files

$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

4) if you encounter dependency problems or something (and you will), please do type

$ sudo apt-get -f install

5) On my instalation, I’ve only encountered one dependency/version problem with this package: libc6. So all you need to do is to add Debian Sid repository and afterwards

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install libc6

And it will update that package, and you should be problem free.
Note: Don’t forget to remove debian SID’s repos, after this.

6) Resume to Step 3

And enjoy a cool super-lightweight dock bar! 😉
